The Truth About "Letting Go"
"Are you feeling ready to let this go of this item?"
My clients know this phrase well. I say it when I notice them holding an item in their hand for longer than usual. I say it when they start verbally processing everything in their heart connected to this item. I say it when I see that certain look in their eyes.
My job is never to manipulate someone into getting rid of something they aren't ready to let go of it. Instead, I am a guide towards really diving deep and being intentional about what items we keep in our home or office. Personally, I am a minimalist - but that doesn't mean I expect others to be.
Every once in a while, I get asked an interesting question: "Have you ever gotten rid of something and regretted it?"
The short answer is - totally! What I typically emphasize is that regret comes along a very small percentage of the time.
But there is more to the story. Sometimes I remember an item I had many years ago that I hastily donated - and I realized that I really really miss it.
And you know what? I am okay with that. The few times I feel sadness over an item can no where near outweigh the satisfaction I feel when looking around my perfectly organized room, or the relief I feel when it takes me less than a day to move because I own so few items.
Missing an item that I long ago donated does not fill me with regret - it gives me information. Information on who I am and what kind of items make me happy in my life.
And when these rare nostalgic moments for items from a previous life float by me, they float away just as quickly and I move on with my day.
